Sephora’s latest new skincare addition with clean approval stamp, Sobel Skin Rx.
A leader in the industry, cosmetic dermatologist and founder of Sobel Skin Rx, Dr. Howard Sobel, is someone who has pioneered the union of dermatology and cosmetic surgery. Love Le Lait chatted with Dr. Sobel to learn about his successful career as a dermatologist as well as launching eight products online at Sephora in 2020. After our interview of Dr. Sobel, it is evident that he brings his passion for dermatology and cosmetic surgery to Sobel Skin Rx.
His unique and completely personalized dermatology and cosmetic surgery center in Manhattan is designed with one single-minded focus: to help each patient feel comfortable in their own skin. Dr. Sobel has a “masterful touch” and can use the perfect combination of techniques from both dermatology and cosmetic surgery to create visible, lasting results. So, what makes Sobel Skin Rx stand out from the crowd? According to Dr. Sobel, it is all about the highly concentrated active ingredients skincare products clinically tested line without irritating or damaging the skin.
“My favorite part of my job would be helping my patients achieve their ideal skin. Whether it’s through a skincare routine using Sobel Skin Rx or in-office treatments involving lasers or filler, seeing a patient’s skin transform into the best version of itself is such a great experience.”
Please tell us about yourself and your career path as dermatologist and the trajectory of Sobel Skin Rx?
“I always knew I wanted to offer my patients more than just skin tips and treatments, which is what made Sobel Skin part of the early medspa advancement in the United States. Providing my patients with both highly effective treatments and medicine-backed procedures, I merged dermatology and cosmetic surgery. Seeing the need for concentrated and effective skincare products, I created my own line: DDF. As advancements are constantly made in science and dermatology, I also saw the increased need for result-driven products to tackle all of my patients’ common skin concerns. This led me to developing Sobel Skin Rx, which merges the latest technological innovations and professional-grade ingredients to provide my patients and consumers with highly-effective and potent products.”
“One of the biggest ‘a-ha’ moments in my career is the creation of Sobel Skin Rx’s SB-100 patent-pending delivery system. This system is why Sobel Skin Rx can contain such high levels of concentration without irritating or damaging the skin.”
What inspired you to start your own skincare line?
“I was inspired by the evolving need for high-concentration, over-the-counter products that not only my patients desired, but the general consumer did as well. I wanted to give both patients and consumers professional-strength products that were over the counter, high quality and provided the very best results. Seeing the limitation of clinical skincare with high potency, I decided to take it into my own hands and create Sobel Skin Rx.”
What do you believe has been the impact of Sobel Skin Rx on the beauty industry?
“Sobel Skin Rx provides consumers with easily accessible, professional-grade products with long-lasting benefits. The beauty industry has had its fair share of clinical skincare, but I think that Sobel Skin Rx really allows consumers to use high-concentrated ingredients without having to take a visit to the dermatologist. It has given consumers products to transform and rejuvenate their skin without needing a prescription.”
What do you feel are your top 4 products you would recommend for treating the following: anti-aging, dark spots, maximum hydration, oily acne prone skins?
“Retinol is famous for being an anti-aging ingredient – for good reason! It effectively minimizes the look of fine lines and wrinkles, leaving you with supple, younger looking skin. The Sobel Skin Rx 4.5% Retinol Night Treatment is a potent anti-aging product that dramatically improves the skin’s texture, reduces the look of pores and diminishes the look of fine lines and wrinkles.”
“A vitamin C serum is perfect for glowing skin. I love the Sobel Skin Rx 35% Vitamin C Face Serum for brightening skin and minimizing dark spots. This high-concentration product also tackles dullness and elasticity, leaving you with all-around radiant and supple skin.”
“A long-lasting moisturizer is essential for hydrated skin. The Sobel Skin Rx Bio Hyaluronic Moisturizing Cream provides maximum hydration without any greasiness, resulting in plump, glowing and youthful skin. Aside from adding hydration, it also protects the skin’s barrier and reduces water loss, ensuring your skin stays healthy and hydrated for longer.”
“Peels are great ways of providing maximum exfoliation to remove any excess sebum or buildup on the skin, which can lead to excess oil, clogged pores and acne. The Sobel Skin Rx 30% Glycolic Acid Peel is a professional-grade peel that breaks down dead skin cells, removing any excess oils and creating a smoother and brighter complexion. It reduces the look of fine lines, helps with minimizing dark spots and acne and leaves skin at a perfect pH level.”
What are the essential parts of a Dr. Sobel skincare routine?
“While I customize all skin care recommendations based on skin concerns and skin type, I think an effective skincare routine has four essentials: cleanser, exfoliator, moisturizer and SPF. A cleanser is needed to get a clean base for the rest of your products. The Sobel Skin Rx 27% Glycolic Acid Facial Cleanser gets rid of any dirt and grime that can build up on the face without overly drying or stripping the skin. Following a cleanser, I recommend using an exfoliator, like the Sobel Skin Rx 30% Glycolic Acid Peel. This professional-grade peel should be used twice a week to remove the layer of dead skin and reveal smooth, glowing and youthful skin. Even if you have oily skin, a moisturizer should always be a part of a skincare routine. The Sobel Skin Rx Bio Hyaluronic Moisturizing Cream is perfect for long-lasting hydration for soft, supple skin. Adding a moisturizer can balance out your skin’s oil production, resulting in less oily skin over time. The final and most important step of a skincare routine is SPF. Even when you’re inside or the sun isn’t out, an SPF is needed to protect your skin from the aging UV rays and sun damage. I love the Sobel Skin Rx Plant Stem Cell Day Cream + SPF 30 for both sun protection and hydration.”

What emerging trends do you see in skincare in 2020?
“We have seen the main target for skincare and beauty be predominantly younger consumers, but I think there is a shift in this focus with more and more brands realizing that the older demographic is looking for products that work with their skin as well. Mature skin needs as much attention as younger skin, so I believe that having this older audience as one of my main consumers is important. We cannot overlook the needs of women once they reach a certain age. Products that help with anti-aging, such as the Sobel Skin Rx 4.5% Retinol Night Treatment, as well as those that are hydrating like the Sobel Skin Rx Bio Hyaluronic Moisturizing Cream are perfect for the more mature demographic.”
Men as a focus
“Just like women, men need to take care of their skin as well. I have seen an increase in men wanting to use skincare, but not necessarily knowing the proper products and steps to create a routine. I created Sobel Skin Rx to be inclusive of all ages, genders and skin types, so men’s needs are definitely a focus of mine. The Sobel Skin Rx Triple Oligo Peptide Eye Cream is a great option for men looking to tackle their fine lines and dark circles, while the Sobel Skin Rx 15% Niacinamide Gel Serum is perfect for those wanting to minimize the size of their pores and blemishes. Overall, men are increasingly concerned with their skin and need the right products and information to take care of it.”
What are the various types of procedures that you offer in your NYC office?
“I offer both dermatology and cosmetic surgery, so Sobel Skin in the Upper East Side of New York City tackles a wide range of concerns. Botox, Juvéderm, PRP and Kybella are just a few of the injectables that we do in-office. We also do lasers, ranging from Vivace to reduce fine lines and wrinkles to laser hair removal. EmSculpt is a popular treatment that patients come in for to burn fat and grow muscles. Along with these procedures, we also do a variety of facials and peels, as well as liposuction. A full list of our procedures and treatments can be found on SobelSkin.com.”
Biggest “a-ha” moments in your career?
“One of the biggest ‘a-ha’ moments in my career is the creation of Sobel Skin Rx’s SB-100 patent-pending delivery system. This system is why Sobel Skin Rx can contain such high levels of concentration without irritating or damaging the skin. It mimics the healthy skin structure of a teenager, working harmoniously with the skin to ensure absorption of the ingredients, penetrating the skin in a gentle, time-released basis for long-term benefits. This delivery system has allowed me to formulate Sobel Skin Rx to its maximum potency to provide users with the best results and over time, repaired and healthier skin.”
What is the favorite part of your job?
“My favorite part of my job would be helping my patients achieve their ideal skin. Whether it’s through a skincare routine using Sobel Skin Rx or in-office treatments involving lasers or filler, seeing a patient’s skin transform into the best version of itself is such a great experience. I work with clients of all skin concerns, so I love getting the chance to create a personal experience and give them the best care and advice on achieving their dream skin.”
