Data tells us that consumers today are far more apt to have anywhere from 10 to as much as 16 different skincare products in their arsenal of beauty products.
Naturally, consumers want to get the most bang-for-the-buck when they are plunking down hundreds of hard-earned dollars on skincare which many of us tend to be somewhat unclear on what steps should be taken in which order and with which products. We have found that more consumers than you might think, moisturizer before your serum, when in fact, the serum should be applied first, followed by the moisturizer.
Now, first take a deep breath and fear not, we are here to assist you in your quest to achieve that dewy, fresh look. We want you to get the most use out of each of the aforementioned products which you have experienced a level of satisfaction and success with. It can be confusing and a bit overwhelming trying to determine what comes first and when should I apply it – day or night or both.
According to dermatologist’s – our skincare regimen should be followed by a simple rule, which is to “layer your skin-care products by weight”.
“Skincare products should be applied from thinnest to thickest of their texture.”
Essentially, you want to use products which compliments your skin-type and you want to “layer” the products on your skin from thinnest to thickest texture. Note: the order you layer your skincare products matters to deliver glow and effortless clean skin.
We want to simplify the order which you apply your skincare products into AM and PM. For those products which you do not use, simply skip over that step to next one in order to build the most effective regimen that you can comfortably follow.
Below are the most effective steps in skincare products which will ensure you get the most out of each product.
Step 1: Cleanser AM/PM
Choose a face cleanser which benefits your skin-type. It’s recommended that you wash your face twice a day – once in the morning and once at night. This is important to remove dirt, oil, makeup and pollution each of us encounter every day. Some experts suggest double cleansing – meaning that you are removing your makeup first with a dedicated makeup remover before you even begin washing your face. Love Le Lait recommends using a “Makeup Eraser” and wetting it with warm water which aids in removing the makeup quickly and then following this with washing your face with a gentle cleanser.
Step 2: Toner AM/PM
Use the toner after you wash your face to help eliminate any remaining dirt or makeup. Simply apply the toner with a cotton pad and gently repeat this all over your face to cleanse your pores. At Love Le Lait, we like to use a water-like formula or mist-spray such as pomegranate water mist to spray all over your face for additional hydration.
Step 3: Spot Cream AM/PM
If you use any type of topical treatment to clear your acne or lighten scars, apply it directly to the affected areas to allow your skin soak up the benefits.
Step 4: Serum AM/PM
Serum is concentrated with active ingredients such as antioxidants including vitamin A, C and E. When layered underneath a moisturizer, serum acts as a targeted treatment for wrinkles, pigmentation and redness. Apply 3-4 drops all over your face and neck and gently massage for 30-60 seconds until the serum is absorbed.
Step 5: Moisturizer AM/PM
Moisturizer is a non-negotiable in your skincare daily regimen. It prevents dryness, slows the signs of aging and soothes sensitive skin. Begin with an eye cream which can help to reduce or even erase the signs of aging: fine lines, wrinkles, and dark circles. Fine lines and wrinkles come from both sun damage and your skin producing less collagen as you age. Collagen helps maintain skin’s elasticity. Then apply a moisturizer a pea-sized into palm focus on up and out across your forehead, from your nose across your cheeks and swirl it in using circular motion using your ring finger to prevent tugging or tearing your delicate skin.
Step 6: Oil PM
Face oils are considered a form of emollient, meaning that they help to strengthen the outer layer of your skin —by softening and sealing it, preventing water loss, reduce wrinkles, protect your skin and is a perfect primer for makeup. Spread face oil across the palm of your hand, and then gently dab it onto the skin and allow it to glide across your skin. Unlike moisturizer applications, which focus on your fingertips, try to use your entire hand when applying oil.
Step 7: SPF AM
Finally, don’t forget to apply a sunscreen containing a physical block like titanium dioxide or zinc oxide which can be applied last, after your moisturizer.
