First Take: JLO Beauty

Jennifer Lopez, an actress, singer and one of Hollywood’s leading celebrities, has yet another successful addition to her already impressive resume – a beauty brand that women are looking up to. At age 51, Jennifer Lopez launched JLO Beauty on January 01, 2021, with  seven  skin-care products, including a gel-cream cleanser, a sheet mask, an eye cream, two different type of face moisturizers and highlighting booster. The number one question that Jennifer Lopez claims that she has received over the years has been about her glowing and youthful skin, which is why she felt almost an “obligation” to share what she has learned by creating a product with a luxurious feel yet an accessible skincare line.

After twenty years of dreaming about this line, JLo Beauty finally launched in January 2021. The collection currently consists of seven skin care products that offer both instant and long-term results. In fact, the brand went through over 100 rounds of product development to meet JLo’s standards of excellence. In this review, we will discuss three of her products in the collection, key ingredients and my humble take on if it is worth it or not?

To begin with, the leading ingredient in the line is Olive Complex, which Lopez claims is a family tradition and beauty secret handed down from her mother for shiny hair, glowing skin, and healthy nails.  JLo Beauty skin care collection is the proprietary JLo Beauty, a four-part olive blend that consists of squalane, fermented oil, olive leaf extract, and extra-virgin olive oil. Squalane, coming from olives harvested in Andalusia, Spain, helps to replenish lost moisture, calm irritation, helps to maintain hydration, and leaves the skin exceptionally soft. It sounds like a truly multi-tasking ingredient. Besides the proprietary Olive Complex, other beneficial ingredients that you’ll find in JLo Beauty skin care products include hyaluronic acid, peptides, Japanese rice-sake ferment, yeast-derived ferment, vitamin E, and many more unique ingredients. In addition, all JLo Beauty skin care products are free from harmful ingredients such as parabens, phthalates, mineral oil, dyes, and fragrance.

You can buy her products via the official JLO Beauty website, Sephora, and Amazon US. The price point starts at $18 for a sheet mask and top out at $118 for a serum — is it worth it? I chose three of her products that are essential and tested each product for three months. Let’s take a closer look at what these products claim they can do.

That JLo Glow Serum is a rich, multi-tasking serum that features a sugar-derived matrix to immediately lift and tighten the skin. Soothing Japanese rice-sake and yeast-derived ferments soothe, condition, brighten and plump the look of skin. I personally used much better serums and I honestly believe it is way too pricey for my wallet to justify the above-average-cost.

The JLo Beauty Wonder Cream is formulated for those with tired, dehydrated, dull skin. The formula contains hyaluronic acid to increase the skin’s hydration while a mix of beneficial ingredients — including peptides, niacinamide, and collagen-protecting carnosine — which support elasticity and visibly reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Overall, the Wonder Cream is said to help nourish, brighten, smooth, and plump your complexion. I love this cream and I use it for my night skincare routine. The cream is rich and super hydrating. With all of this being said, I would unequivocally recommend Blockbuster Wonder Cream for mature or dry skin.

The final product in the JLo Beauty skin care collection is an anti-aging eye cream which contains a blurring complex for masking dark circles and a patented peptide sequence to improve the look of fine lines and wrinkles. There is also a sugar-derived matrix that can immediately lift and tighten your skin. Over time, this eye cream is claimed to help boost vitality, elasticity, and luminosity. Unfortunately, this is another product that I am not going to purchase again. I used it for three months and it appears to be “just” a moisturizer for your eyes. In my humble opinion, I did not see any change or improvements. I used much better eye creams, and this was certainly not one of them.

Overall, I think that JLo Beauty skin care products are formulated well but may not be embraced by all who use them. The Blockbuster Wonder Cream is the clear winner and has the potential to keep your skin moisturized and healthy with a youthful glow.
